Chris Shute
I am a lighting technician and programmer with networking and control bias. I currently work as Lighting Control Technician at the Royal National Theatre, London.

Originally from Hampshire, I found my way into technical theatre 10 years ago. I volunteered and then worked in my local venue, gaining an interest specifically in Lighting. I went on to attend Rose Bruford College for three years studying Lighting Control, graduating in 2021 with First Class Honours.

In the years since, I have worked in theatre, architectural lighting and corporate events. I learned to use new softwares including Pharos when working on architectural projects. I've brought this experience and built upon it in my current role at the Royal National Theatre in the Lighting Control Team. Working closely with the venues, programmers and across the building to maintain and implement infrastructure projects as well as support shows.

Recent accomplishments for the team include the upgrade and reinstatement of the Dorfman Theatre, with new networking equipment, power redundancy and lighting systems. Recent personal accomplishments include; reconfiguring our network device monitoring system and the network design for Nye as it transferred to Cardiff in 2024 and 2025. Programming work at the NT includes; second programmer on Till The Stars Come Down.

Building on EOS programming skills with advanced networking and control system infrastructure, I have a unique perspective of theatrical lighting systems beyond the console. Whilst working at the National Theatre, I am exploring opportunities to program externally and continue to create theatre.
